What Is Tithing?
A "tithe". . . which just means a "tenth". . . is defined as the first 10% of a person's income that is to be given back to God. Tithing is a principle taught throughout the entire Bible, both Old and New Testaments.
Why Do We Tithe?
The Bible says that the purpose of tithing is to teach you always to put God first in your life. Tithing is both a reminder that God is the supplier of everything we have (Psalm 24:1; 1 Corinthians 10:26; Hebrews 2:10), and a way of guarding your own heart against greed (Luke 12:15). It is also God's personal invitation to trust him and experience an outpouring of blessing in your life. God always blesses obedience.
"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the LORD Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it."
This is the only place in Scripture where God tells us to put him to the test. In other words, he's saying, "Go ahead. I dare you. See is you can out-give me!"
